Anuradhapura is a laid back city in Sri Lanka with an array of temples, archaeological buildings and ancient ruins. The city was built in 900BC and has various sites showing the remains of history since then.

Places to Visit

  • Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba 

    The Ruwanwelisaya is a stupa and a hemispherical structure containing relics, in Sri Lanka, considered sacred to many Buddhists all over the world. Two quarts or one Drona of the Gothama Buddha's relics are enshrined in the stupa, which is the largest collection of his relics anywhere.

  • Samadhi Buddha Statue

    Situated in the Mahamevnawa Park in Anuradhapura, Samadhi Buddha statue is of Buddha depicted in the Dhyana position. The statue is seven feet tall and is carved with dolomite marble.  

  • Jetavanaramaya Dagoba 

    The third tallest ancient structure in the world, Jetavanaramaya Dagoba is sacred to the Buddhists and is one of the most intriguing sites in Anuradhapura. It is believed that part of a sash or a belt tied here by Buddha is still preserved here.
